Truly Reef Safe

Reefs provide a large fraction of earth's biodiversity

Coral reefs are important for many different reasons, they contain the most diverse ecosystems on the planet, protect coastlines from the damaging effects of wave action and tropical storms and provide habitats and shelter for many marine organisms.

Around the world, coral reefs are severely threatened by human activities

These include the effects of climate change, coastal development, marine-based and inland pollution, and overexploitation.

Virtually all rural run-off water is polluted by pesticides. Insecticides, herbicides and fungicides have been shown to affect corals at very low concentrations. Insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides have also been shown to affect corals at very low concentrations.

Chemical sunscreens are damaging our coral reefs

The National Park Service says that 4,000 to 6,000 tons of sunscreen enter reef areas each year, and studies have found that the chemicals they contain can damage coral reefs, contributing to “bleaching” and death. The chemicals get into seawater through wastewater and from swimmers wearing chemical sunscreen.

Hawaii, Thailand, Palau, U.S. Virgin Islands, Mexico, Bonaire, Aruba & Key West, Florida have banned sunscreens defined as skincare products sold with up to 10 of the following ingredients:

  • oxybenzone (benzophenone-3)
  • octinoxate (octyl methoxycinnamate)
  • octocrylene
  • enzacamene (4-methyl-benzylidene camphor)
  • triclosan
  • methyl paraben
  • ethyl paraben
  • butyl paraben
  • benzyl paraben
  • phenoxyethanol

Two ingredients – zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are both mineral sunscreen UV filters that do not penetrate and are not absorbed through the skin and are generally recognized as safe and effective for use in sunscreens. Thus, the safety evaluation does not need to consider more than direct effects on the skin. FDA has sufficient evidence that they are GRASE Category I.

When zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are manufactured as a UV filters, they are made as either small particles, named “nano” or larger particles, named “non-nano”. Research studies show that very small nanoparticles (smaller than 35nm) of zinc oxide can be harmful to the environment by being toxic to marine life.

Non-nano zinc oxide and non-nano titanium dioxide minerals filters are safe, effective and environmentally friendly

Non-nano zinc oxide and non-nano titanium dioxide are the only coral-safe sunscreen filters and they are safe and effective in blocking UV rays. Sunscreens formulated with non-nano particles will clearly state non-nano zinc oxide and/or non-nano titanium dioxide on the products active ingredient list.
