Sunscreen for Children and Babies

There is strong evidence that sun exposure and sunburn during childhood multiply the risk of one day developing skin cancer, including melanoma

While melanoma still rarely develops before age 20, incidence in children and teens is rising rapidly. The skin of all infants (not just those who have fair skin) is particularly vulnerable to sun damage. This is partly because they haven’t yet developed all the melanin — the natural skin pigment that provides some sun protection — that they will have when they get older.

For best results, apply sunscreen about 15 to 30 minutes before your baby goes outside. Don't forget about ears, around the eyes, hands, feet, shoulders, and behind the neck. Lift up bathing suit straps and apply sunscreen underneath them (in case the straps shift as a baby moves).

The best way to protect baby's from the sun is to keep them in the shade as much as possible. In addition, dress your baby in protective, lightweight clothing that fully covers the arms and legs, a hat with a brim and sunglasses. Make sure he or she doesn't get overheated. You can also provide shade for your baby by using an umbrella or pop-up tent.

No Chemical Sunscreens

Chemical filter sunscreens were developed for their ease of use and inexpensive ingredients. These products typically include a combination of two to six of the following active ingredients: oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate. T Guide to Sunscreens

Consumer Reports has advised against spraying sunscreen on your baby. The FDA has already determined that sprays can be a fire hazard and potentially cause severe burns if they do catch fire. That’s why they recommend against spraying or being near an open flame.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Dermatology and the Skin Cancer Foundation recommend a water-resistant mineral sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to younger children’s and baby’s sensitive skin

Mineral sunscreens are made with zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide, sit on your skin and reflect light and block the sun’s UVA and UVB rays.
