Florida is the Newest State Initiating the Clean Beauty Movement

Posted by on

Unfortunately, with all the wonderful things that come with Florida beaches and sunshine, Florida ranks second in the nation for the highest rate of new melanoma cases.

Doctors and skin care specialists all agree, the “first line of defense” against skin cancer is sunscreen.

It is in Florida’s citizens best interest and Florida’s coral reefs to ban chemical sunscreens. The state does have a compelling interest to protect the Florida reef, now that it is investing millions of state and federal dollars in coral reef restorations.

According to peer-reviewed studies compiled this year by Florida’s Office of Program Policy Analysis and Government Accountability, the Legislature’s research arm, oxybenzone and octinoxate in sunscreens have negative effects on corals and marine life when exposed to “concentration levels generally not observed in nature.”

Key West has banned the sale of sunscreens that contain the ingredients oxybenzone and octinoxate. Starting in 2021, no stores in Key West can carry sunscreens that contain the reef-damaging chemicals.

Many of these toxic chemicals have been banned or restricted by other nations and have been slated for removal from the stores selling cosmetics with harmful chemicals. This trend will grow throughout the U.S. and Florida because consumers are clearly making considered choices.

The global wellness industry, according to the 2018 Global Wellness Economy Monitor report, grew in value from $3.7 trillion in 2015 to $4.2 trillion in 2017 – an increase of 12.8 per cent. “The wellness economy has grown at nearly twice the rate of global economic growth [3.6 per cent],” the report confirms. Personal care and beauty accounted for more than $1 billion in 2017.

The clean beauty movement, once a niche trend, has gone mainstream. Retailers have been educating their customers that there are safer and higher quality products to live a healthy and wellness lifestyle.

So how can a resident of Florida or tourist protect themselves with a mineral sunscreen that is safe for themselves, their children and the enviornment?

Love Sun Body is one of the leaders in the clean beauty movement.
